Ook dit jaar trappen we de festivaldag weer af met een gratis openingsconcert in de Kompaszaal op het KNSM-eiland. En deze editie doen we dat met het Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest. Het Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest speelt verschillende muziekvormen van Granada tot en met Bagdad uit diverse tijdsperioden en stijlen. Van het rijke Arabo Andalus repertoire tot en met de mystieke Oosterse muziek, en van de geraffineerde improvisatiemuziek uit de Arabische wereld tot en met de
volkse muziek uit de Maghreb. Ze zijn echte ambassadeurs van Andalusische muziek. Speciaal voor dit concert komt het Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest met een paar leden, om het klein en intiem te houden. Verwacht een vrolijke set van gevarieerd Arabisch repertoire waarbij iedere musicus zijn of haar favoriet met het publiek deelt.

Bad Ass Jazz Festival is a place of sharing, learning, inspiring each other and celebrating human expression through dance. BAZZ celebrates the legacy of Jazz by bridging dance communities like Swing, its descendant Street dances or other Afro-Diasporic dances together. With a goal of softening the borders between these styles while acknowledging their evolution and differences.

This is both dance & music festival, so equal importance is on live music. So rather than music being here for dancers, we share the space equally with musicians and fuel each other with energy and inspiration!

With an intention to celebrate and acknowledge Jazz and it’s legacy, at BAZZ you can also hear and party to variety of live & DJ music that falls into that spectrum, however, we will always centre Black American Old School Jazz!

Throughout the weekend you can learn from Bad Ass teachers and get down with amazing people to LIVE music by musicians who really know how to get people moving! In a charming city of Amsterdam, a monumental art nouveau building Kompaszaal will provide us with a space to learn during the day, and in the evening Kompaszaal will turn into a sweaty nightclub where you can enjoy live music covering the wide spectrum of genres from Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Hip Hop, Funk all the way to Amapiano, Afrohouse, and much more – Basically everything that makes us pump the chest and shake that butt.

The workshops are oriented towards higher level dancers. For both of the workshops you need to be comfortable with Swing Outs, Sugar Pushes, Charleston and faster tempo dancing. You should have been dancing for more than 2 years, or you have been taking unlimited classes with Swing Philosophy for at least a year. If you have less experience, but you think you can handle it, reach out to Teodora from Swing Philosophy.

JAZZ WARRIORS Big Band are playing for us at our Big Band Night in KZ!

We are all about the glorious music of the 1930&40, mixed with nowadays life. It’s an experience for young and old, for the listener and for the dancer, for the party animal and for the wallflower. We have the space for all of it in the allure of our 1956 stunning art-deco venue.

About the band:
Mathieu Najean began his musical career by learning the classical bassoon in Angoulême, where he grew up. He also began playing jazz, a few years later on the tenor saxophone. He studied jazz saxophone at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
Since 2018, Mathieu Najean has been based in Paris, where he formed a septet to perform his compositions. In 2020, he released his first album under his own name. The album “Panorama” by the Mat Najean Jazz Band was well received by critics.
In 2023, he released a second album of compositions, this time in collaboration with New York singer Cait Jones.
In 2024, he released an album of quartet standards featuring vibraphonist Maxime Prébet as a guest.
